The president of this year’s organizing committee remarked, “The most difficult thing when you love is to say goodbye,” before passing the torch to the team representing Los Angeles, the host city for the 2028 Olympics.

Gymnast Simone Biles, accompanied by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, accepted the Olympic flag, followed by a rendition of the U.S. national anthem performed by singer H.E.R. Staying on stage, H.E.R. played as Tom Cruise made his entrance, setting the tone for what LA’s Games might entail.

After receiving the Olympic flag, Cruise jumped onto his motorcycle and sped out of the stadium. A Mission Impossible-style movie montage followed, featuring Cruise transporting the flag to the U.S. with a skydive and a dash to the Hollywood sign.

The ceremony then shifted to Los Angeles, where the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed live from Venice Beach, and Billie Eilish followed with a performance of her latest hit, “Birds of a Feather,” capping off the evening.
