Doctors for Choice took to social media to detail the case of a Maltese woman being brought to court whilst facing charges of having a medical abortion at home.

‘What should have never happened, happened today’ wrote the NGO, revealing that the Women’s Rights Foundation’s legal team assisted the woman the ordeal. She was let off with a conditional discharge. 

‘We are informed that throughout the investigation and the entire proceedings she was treated with the dignity and respect that she deserves by the police and our justice system. Whilst we appreciate that, it does not change the fact that this should have never, ever happened in the first place’.

The post reinvigorated a recent national debate had about abortion, after the government motioned a bill which would decriminalise the practice.

Filmmakers listen up! Have you always wanted to pursue a passion project but never had the funds to do so? Well, now filmmakers who have never received financial assistance or funding related to film production from any government entity have the opportunity to get right into it!

The ‘Malta Create’ Short Film Fund was announced at a workshop hosted by the Malta Film Commission (MFC) at MCAST. This fund was created in association with the Mediterrane Film Festival with the goal of assisting short film creation by providing a grant of €100,000. Additionally, it offers the awardees guidance and assistance in the sector.

The fund is a crucial program that not only supports the local film industry but also develops talent and offers budding filmmakers a strong basis. Malta film commissioner Johann Grech expressed his commitment towards supporting the development of talent and fostering chances for the future of Maltese cinema as the industry continues to develop.

The “Malta Create” Short Film Fund is significant, says Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo, and goes beyond only helping the film business. It displays Malta’s passion to cultural development and artistic quality and shows the country’s commitment to fostering the creative arts. These elements are crucial to Malta’s booming tourism industry. The ‘Malta Create’ project invests in the youth by providing real-world learning experiences, encouraging creativity, and laying the foundation for success through its relationship with MCAST.
