Biles and ‘Queen’ Andrade Create Iconic Medal Moment

Aug 7 2024 Share

The 27-year-old gymnast Simone Biles from the United States, who has won three gold medals at the Olympic Games, secured a silver medal this year, following Rebeca Andrade from Brazil. Rather than showing disappointment, Biles displayed joy as history was made with the first all-Black podium in men’s or women’s gymnastics at the Olympics, with Jordan Chiles from the United States winning the bronze medal.

“It was an all-Black podium, so that was super exciting for us. Then Jordan was like, ‘Should we bow to her?’ and I was like, ‘Absolutely.'” The bow was a show of respect to Andrade, whose excellence symbolizes a sport that is becoming more diverse and inclusive.
“Rebeca is so amazing, she’s a queen,” said Biles. “She’s such an excitement to watch, and the fans in the crowd were always cheering for her, so it was just the right thing to do.”
