Works are currently progressing with efforts to convert the former car park adjacent to Rabat Parish Church into a pedestrian zone for public enjoyment.

A combined investment of €850,000 from the Malta Tourism Authority and Infrastructure Malta is funding the project, which includes designing and installing new paving, enhancing the designated area, installing new lighting to improve the surrounding aesthetics, and adding new benches. The project is slated for completion by June of this year.

These details were announced during a visit by Minister Clayton Bartolo (Minister for Tourism and Public Funds), Minister Chris Bonett (Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects), Mayor Sandro Craus of Rabat, and representatives from the Malta Tourism Authority, Infrastructure Malta, and the Cultural Heritage Foundation of the Archdiocese of Malta.

Minister Clayton Bartolo emphasized that this project represents another significant step in enhancing our country’s tourism offerings.

“Rabat has tremendous potential as a hub for cultural and religious tourism. It is crucial that we continue investing to ensure the ongoing competitiveness of the Maltese Islands,” Minister Bartolo remarked.

Minister Chris Bonett underscored the importance of prioritizing projects like this, which benefit the entire community.

“Transforming this area from a car-centric space into an open pedestrian zone will provide a welcoming environment for both residents and the numerous tourists who visit throughout the year. We remain committed to advancing infrastructure projects that elevate the visual appeal of every village while offering inviting spaces for visitors,” Minister Bonett concluded.
