New York has become the latest US state to allow “natural organic reduction”, otherwise known as human composting.

The process allows a person to have their body turned into soil after their passing and is widely considered as an environmentally-friendly alternative to being buried or cremated.
The first US state to green-light such a process was Washington back in 2019, with Colorado, Oregon, Vermont and California following suit soon after.
In the process, the body is deposited inside a closed vessel with materials such as woodchips, straw grass and alfalfa which gradually break it down; any remaining contagion is killed a month later via heating process and soil is then given to loved ones to be used in planting.
United States firm Recompose has state that its service could save a tonne of carbon when compared to traditional methods like cremation or burials.
