Airless tires aren’t a new invention thanks to Michelin, but getting a flat-tire in the middle of a busy road might just become a thing of the past.
South Korean tire company Hankook Tire and Technology have been experimenting to make such a future a reality for over 10 years. It has now used CES 2022 to showcase the latest version of its airless I-Flex concept tire.
To showcase the tire, Hankook teamed up with Hyundai, fitting them into four large Plug and Drive (PnD) modules on the L7, which is a micro-mobility concept with infinite wheel rotation capabilities.
This allows it to change directions instantly, even in restricted spaces. The tire isn’t sized for cars, but was designed in a smaller 10-inch format tailored for such applications.
400 mm in diameter and 105mm in width, the concept was developed in biomimetic studies and testing maximise shock absorption and load-bearing.
In addition to making punctures and the accidents they cause a thing of the past, Hankook highlights the fact airless tires would be low maintenance, with no more need for tire pressure monitoring or pumping up flats.
Unfortunately, no timeline has been given for when you can be driving a car riding on airless tires. Hankook said its continuing research to make further improvements, with even competitors Michelin and Goodyear making progress.
