At a press conference, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti unveiled a groundbreaking research project focused on preventing colorectal cancer.
This initiative is part of a wider strategy to enhance quality of life, reduce healthcare system burdens, and create a healthier society. The project is being conducted in partnership with the University of Malta.
“This isn’t just about advancing science,” said Azzopardi Tanti. “It’s about empowering individuals with practical tools to take charge of their health.
Colorectal cancer is a significant concern, and with initiatives like this, we’re reshaping the way we approach prevention and treatment.”
The project’s primary objectives include:
Detecting colorectal cancer risks early, before symptoms arise.
Minimising the need for unnecessary procedures like unwarranted colonoscopies.
Allocating critical healthcare resources more effectively to those in genuine need.
A key focus of the project is promoting a preventive mindset, with education and awareness playing a pivotal role.
Professor Godfrey Grech, the lead researcher, described the initiative as a meaningful step toward a more resilient healthcare system.
“By merging research and innovation, we’re prioritising prevention over cure. This project benefits individuals today while laying the groundwork for healthier future generations,” he said.
Azzopardi Tanti concluded, “Prevention isn’t just a strategy—it’s a commitment to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live a healthier life. This initiative not only combats colorectal cancer but also strengthens our communities.”
The project highlights the importance of collaboration among researchers, healthcare institutions, and communities while advancing health-centred innovation.
