Another local record in relation to the Maltese festa has been set as The Malta Records announce the creation of the longest ‘liedna’ made by a single person.

The record was established by Leonard Abdilla, resident of Ħal Kirkop, who created the 300 metre festa decoration in 57 hours and 15 minutes.

Leonard forms part of the Soċjeta Mużikali San Ġużepp Ħal Kirkop and has been an avid lover of the traditional village feast for the majority of his life.

The liedna is a plastic decoration which creates the colourful lining across various Maltese villages during the feast.

Bari Balla Identified As Victim Of Sliema Roof Collapse

Bari Balla Identified As Victim Of Sliema Roof Collapse
Apr 23 2024 Share

Bari Balla, a father of six from Albania, tragically lost his life in Sliema when a roof collapsed during construction work at a property on St Ignatius Street.

His death occurred on Saturday, April 20, 2024. Another worker, aged 31 and also Albanian, was injured but managed to escape. Balla remained trapped under the rubble and was found deceased after a frantic rescue operation.

Following the incident, the Albanian community in Malta initiated a fundraiser to support Balla’s family in coping with this tragedy.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the roof of the 1920s townhouse collapsed while workers were underneath it.

The construction works were carried out illegally without proper permits or clearance from the Planning Authority or the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).

This accident underscores broader concerns about safety and regulation in Malta’s construction industry. The government has responded by establishing a committee to implement recommendations from a recent public inquiry into construction-related deaths.

Jesmond Muscat, CEO of the BCA, resigned shortly after the incident, coinciding with calls from the prime minister for stringent action by regulatory authorities.

Bari Balla’s funeral will proceed once the body is released by the inquiring magistrate, as the community rallies to support his grieving family in the wake of this devastating loss.

Minister Ian Borg In Gulf Cooperation Council Meeting

Minister Ian Borg In Gulf Cooperation Council Meeting

“The latest developments in the Middle East constitute a worrying escalation, and we must act collectively to encourage all parties to opt for dialogue and negotiation rather than the use of force,” emphasized Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg during a high-level forum of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council with the Gulf Cooperation Council in Luxembourg on Monday.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is a regional organization that brings together Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Minister Borg reiterated Malta’s commitment to affirming the importance of dialogue and effective negotiations in all international fora. He communicated this call for dialogue to Israeli, Iranian, Palestinian, American, and Saudi counterparts over the past days.

“As I highlighted during the UN Security Council debate presided by Malta last week, we must refocus our attention on Gaza and work towards an immediate, permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and adequate humanitarian aid,” he added.

Famine in the Gaza Strip, the soaring death toll and destruction combined with escalations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem continue to remain of utmost concern. “Our message to Israel to avoid a ground invasion in Rafah must also be reiterated in unequivocal terms,” Minister Borg reminded.

Malta also acknowledges the recent positive announcements by Israel concerning the gradual reopening of crossings and a new crossing point in the North of Gaza. This effort must be reinforced to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the communities that desperately need it.

The Minister also referred to the situation in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, noting that the continued Houthi attacks on commercial vessels need to stop, to avoid the risk of unravelling the positive strides made towards peace in Yemen.

While highlighting the efforts of the United States, Egypt, and Qatar to reinstate stability in the region, he once again called for an increased effort towards ongoing peace negotiations. “At this critical juncture, it is ever more important that dialogue and negotiation should reign supreme, as their absence would spell the ever-increasing possibility of further escalations,” Minister Borg concluded.
