‘Swearing in with elegance and poise, our new President Myriam Spiteri Debono embodies the grace and dignity of Malta. A new chapter begins’, Malta.ai wrote.

Malta of course has had a deep connection to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in 2022. The former monarch, who had the longest reign until her death, had called Malta her second home and loved to visit the island.

Valletta's Siege Bell War Memorial Set To Be Restored

Heritage Malta has announced the commencement of restoration works on the Siege Bell War Memorial in Valletta. This memorial, situated at the base of St Christopher’s Bastion and overlooking the Grand Harbour, commemorates the victims of the Second World War in Malta.

Designed by renowned British artist Michael Sandle, the monument was erected in memory of over 7000 war victims and was officially inaugurated on May 29, 1992, marking the 50th anniversary of Malta being awarded the George Cross for bravery during the years 1940-1942.

The structure features a lower ground floor enclosed space and an open first-floor superstructure enclosing the belfry, offering visitors splendid views of the port and surrounding fortifications.

The imposing bronze bell, tolling daily at noon, honors the fallen, while a bronze sculpture representing the burial at sea of an unknown soldier stands before it.

Signs of serious deterioration on the external hardstone cladding necessitated structural reinforcement and repair works to prevent further damage. The project also includes consolidating waterproofing layers and relaying hardstone floors over reinstated concrete floors, along with any necessary structural reinforcements to the cupola, ring-beams, and substructure.

The restoration, funded by national funds totaling approximately €700,000, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, during which time the monument will be inaccessible to the public.
