Jan 17 2023 Share

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne inaugurated a new nursing simulator at educational institution IDEA Academy situated in Mosta, which serves to train nurses who attend the courses in the same institution.

Idea Group Managing Director, Silvio Debono explained how IDEA Academy’s courses are aimed at adults who wish to continue their studies. Silvio Debono said that ever since health courses started being offered at IDEA Academy, 150 medical professionals have graduated whilst another 300 people are currently undertaking the health course.

Chris Fearne praised the Maltese educational institutions for the high level of training being offered to nursing students, who are also being trained in simulators like the one inaugurated by the IDEA Academy.

These simulators include mannequins in a hall environment so that nursing students are confident working in this atmosphere once they start training on patients.

During a press conference, Chris Fearne explained how all nurses who graduate from Maltese educational institutions are given the opportunity to work with the public health sector. He also referred to the continuous efforts being made to attract more people to this vocation whilst explaining that the demand for new nurses requires the Government to recruit foreign nurses.

TVM News revealed that, from 3,376 drug tests conducted last year in Corradino Correctional Facility, only 7 inmates (0.2%) were found positive to some form of drugs.

This was a massive decrease from 134 in 2017 to 7 in 2022, with drug tests increasing overall.

The Facility’s administration told the news platform that the ongoing commitment to prevent access to drugs in prisons includes the individual rehabilitation programme underway for inmates within the prison.

During 2021, 15 prisoners were found positive to drugs after 2,347 tests were carried out. Compared to 2017, a decrease of around 95% was registered as 134 inmates were found positive from 1,861 tests.

Inmates found positive may also start a rehabilitation process in prison to defeat the addiction. Social, psychological and medical monitoring treatments are granted to all inmates once they enter prison, a spokesperson to TVM revealed.

Maltese MEP Cyrus Engerer moves to ban plastic waste exports out of EU

Maltese MEP Cyrus Engerer moves to ban plastic waste exports out of EU
Jan 17 2023 Share

Labour Member of the European Parliament Cyrus Engerer has been negotiating the revision of an EU Waste Shipment Regulation, proposing a complete ban on the exportation of plastic waste outside of the EU.

Engerer revealed that, despite the initial resistance, the proposal has been met very positively by the majority of political groups.

By means of the MEP’s work, the EP now has an agreement to phase out plastic waste exports outside of the EU – a revolutionary step as it will put a halt to the negative effects caused by dumping practices.

Many, if not most, are in favour of banning plastic waste exports, with members of the EP expressing their support for the work done on the revision during this month’s Plenary session.

Cyrus Engerer expressed, during his Plenary session address, his disappointment at the EU waste policy and the way it sought to close an eye to the unacceptable reality affecting so many vulnerable communities outside the European continent.

“We live in one world and exporting pollution to third countries will have a global impact. We cannot remain idle in the face of what our actions are meaning to the health and human rights of people living in developing countries” said Engerer.
