Prime Minister Robert Abela inaugurated the regeneration project of Ġnien Spencer in Marsa.

Spanning an area of approximately 11 acres, Ġnien Spencer has been transformed into a remarkable space for the community, as part of the government’s commitment to investing in green and sustainable spaces in the heart of localities across Malta.

The regenerated garden, spearheaded by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), strongly promotes sustainability. It features a water storage and filtration system, nearly 6,000 shrubs, an additional 6,000 plants, and numerous trees, alongside solar-powered electricity generation systems.

In his speech, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the completion of this project in Marsa, stating, “Today, we witness the realisation of a project in a locality I deeply believe in. A locality that, due to past decisions, faced challenges. Today, I am proud of a government that firmly believes in Marsa.”

He emphasised the importance of regeneration and highlighted key governmental decisions, including the closure of the power station in the area.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising similar projects.

He noted, “We need to accelerate efforts to create more projects like Ġnien Spencer. Initiatives such as Wied Fulija, Qortin in Gozo, and Bengħajsa are equally significant.” He also announced that next year’s budget includes funding for 19 additional open space projects.

Before the inauguration, Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Public Cleansing Miriam Dalli emphasised the symbolic value of Ġnien Spencer in supporting environmental protection efforts.

“We promised 40,000 square meters of new open spaces by the end of the year. This is the third garden we’ve opened in just three days,” she remarked, highlighting the added value these spaces bring to their localities.

The film industry portfolio has been transferred to Culture Minister Owen Bonnici, while Energy and Environment Minister Miriam Dalli will take on additional responsibilities for public cleansing.

Glenn Bedingfield will maintain his direct oversight of public cleansing as parliamentary secretary, but he will now report to the Environment and Energy Minister instead of the Tourism Minister.

Bartolo stepped down on Tuesday after the prime minister cited new revelations about an alleged kickback involving his wife, Amanda Muscat.
