New construction reform will bring peace of mind to Maltese families says Environment Minister

New construction reform will bring peace of mind to Maltese families says Environment Minister
Aug 26 2021 Share

Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia announced that the ongoing building and construction reform will ensure a stronger and more sustainable industry. Speaking during a visit to a construction site together with Parliamentary Secretary for Construction Chris Agius and Building and Construction Authority CEO Karl Azzopardi, the minister highlighted how this will improve the quality of life and provide peace of mind to all families.

In preparation for the licensing of contractors, a registration process has been launched, revealed the Environment minister. The licensing of contractors, according to the minister, is one of the foundations of the government’s commitment to regulating the industry and implementing the promised reform. Launched first and foremost to take stock of existing operations through the registration process, Minister Farrugia also announced the authority has now been officially established.

The transition was completed in recent days, with the Minister highlighting the main scopes of the authority for upcoming years. This includes the implementation of the first ever National Building Codes, explaining how the authority’s executive and board have been working on the strategy and action plan which will lead towards sustainable transformation of the industry.

The Minister stated that the establishment of the authority is one part of the ongoing reform in the construction sector. ‘This was one of the main points in the Quintano report. This reform will continue to modernise, safeguard and strengthen the industry while improving quality of life and providing peace of mind.’

Malta confirms lowest rate of unemployment in history again

Malta confirms lowest rate of unemployment in history again
Aug 26 2021 Share

Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that Malta has registered the lowest amount of unemployment in the country’s history. Despite there being the risk of 50,000 people without work due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Abela highlighted how unity with businesses, institutions and workers yielded such positive results. The necessary measures were taken and now talks concern the need for more workers instead of high unemployment rates.

In July, unemployment continued to decrease as the number of people registering for work was just above 1500. Statistics published by the NSO show how, when compared to the same month of last year, unemployment decreased by around 2,439. The unemployment rate in July of 2020 racked up towards 4,400 persons.

Comparing unemployment month by month also shows a decrease, as in June the number of people unemployed stood at 1,711. This means unemployment was reduced by 169 people in just a month. Other notable differences are clear when it comes to age gaps, as the amount of people between the ages of 30 and 44 who are unemployed decreased by almost three times as much.

The Prime Minister stated that such positive news shows that when it comes to other challenges, a government led by him has the credibility and will to address them.

People risking injury with new TikTok ‘Milk Crate Challenge’

People risking injury with new TikTok ‘Milk Crate Challenge’
Aug 26 2021 Share

Social media challenges which could potentially harm participants pop up and die down randomly, and the current trend involves milk crates and dangerous stunts. Videos with the hashtag #milkcratechallenge on TikTok have racked up more than 10 million views – but what does the challenge actually involve? Well, people stack up milk crates in a pyramid in order to form steps they can walk up. They will then attempt to walk up and down the construct as it gets more dangerous.

The highlight of the videos is usually the fall, with people wobbling as they get closer to the top. Most of them end in complete destruction of the structure, with the person crashing onto the floor below. Some doctors have warned at the trend’s potential to really harm people. Some doctors even reminded those who might get injured doing the challenge that, due to the pandemic, there might not be a hospital bed for them. One woman managed to walk up and down the construct wearing heels, proving it is not technically impossible given the right balance…and dress code?
