The Archdiocese of Malta has expressed deep sadness and regret following the conviction, on appeal, of a diocesan priest found guilty of breaching sexual boundaries with a 15-year-old girl.

In a public statement, the Archdiocese issued an unreserved apology to the victim for the actions of its clergyman, whose name cannot be published due to a court order.

It emphasised that the case had already been referred to the Holy See, which ruled that the priest should be restricted from carrying out his ministry.

The Archdiocese thanked the Church’s Safeguarding Commission for its vital role in handling the case and supporting the victim, who was encouraged to report the abuse to the police.

This case, the Archdiocese noted, serves as a stark reminder of the importance of effective safeguarding structures, particularly in contexts where power imbalances exist.

The Commission continues to urge anyone who feels unsafe or witnesses inappropriate behaviour, especially in Church settings, to come forward.

While reaffirming its commitment to supporting the victim, the Archdiocese also stated that counselling and emotional support services will be extended to the priest involved.
