Wall Street Journal Feature Mario Grech As Possible Pope Contender

May 8 2025 Share

As the second day of the Papal Conclave begins, countless news outlets from around the world are beginning to speculate who will come out on top in the world’s most secretive and sometimes shocking election.

One name that has been making the rounds and has featured in various lists of potential Pope contenders is Malta’s very own, Mario Grech.

The former Bishop of Gozo has also featured in a recent post by the Wall Street Journal, with the world renowned publication naming him as a leading alternative to the “obvious but uninspiring candidate to beat’ Italian Pietro Parolin.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Grech is viewed favourably by many progressive Cardinals due to his reputation as a good listener and his role in spearheading synodal dialogues that brought together bishops and laypeople to discuss the Church’s future.

His inclusive and consultative approach has made him stand out in the eyes of reform-minded clergy.

However, his candidacy may be hindered by opposition from conservative factions within the Church, who are wary of his “touchy-feely synodal approach” and would prefer a Pope with a firmer and more traditional stance on doctrine and Church teaching.

The Exterminator Discover Largest Colony Of Black Cockroach in Malta

The Exterminator Discover Largest Colony Of Black Cockroach in Malta
May 8 2025 Share

The oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis), or black cockroach (as their bodies are mostly dark), is a large species of cockroach, adult males being 18–29 mm and adult females being 20–27 mm.

The species was first noticed in Malta in the 1950s, but it was considered uncommon for many years.

The recent discovery in Malta of a massive colony signals a shift in the presence of these cockroaches. This particular colony was thriving in a place rich in moisture—a perfect environment for them. And When they do appear, it’s usually in big numbers.

These roaches can contaminate food and potentially spread diseases, which poses a risk to public health.

In their post, The Exterminator states that this should be a wake-up call, “The Oriental cockroach is no longer just a minor, occasional intruder. Its presence in Malta is growing, and with it, the risk of food contamination and other public health concerns. Most heavily infested zones at the moment are Siggiewi,Zebbug,Birkirkara and Mellieħa.”
