Egypt’s first female captain Marwa Elselehdar was wrongly blamed for when the Ever Given container got stuck in the Suez Canal, blocking one of the world’s most important trade routes. Elselehdar was however miles away from the Suez Canal, working on the Aida IV in Alexandria as first mate.

The fake news blaming her surprised the captain, with reason, as  social media outlets like Twitter saw posts spreading her name as the reason behind the blockage. Elselehdar, who is 29-years-old, stated that she might have been targeted because she is either the first successful female in the field or due to her Egyptian nationality.
