The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) stated that two robotic computer systems installed in 2017 to handle medicine administration were a complete waste of money and an utter failure. The two systems, which were nicknamed ‘Mario’ and ‘Sophia’, were deployed to ensure that no errors occurred when administering drugs and medicine. This however was not the case, as the union alleged how the systems failed so frequently over two whole years that it surpassed any form of human error, making the nurses’ work much more difficult.
This is because the robotics were prescribing wrong dosages/medications to patients. Union spokespersons pointed out how if it wasn’t for the nurses double and triple checking the drugs, patients would have suffered. Apart from this, Mario and Sophia would cease to work, leaving nurses unable to give any medication. With drug administration having become a nightmare and the project manager having resigned, the MUMN is insisting that the robots should be removed from Mater Dei.
