New Zealand Bans Single Use Plastic Bags In World First

New Zealand Bans Single Use Plastic Bags In World First
Jul 4 2023 Share

New Zealand has just become the first country in the world to ban thin plastic bags as well as plastic straws and silverware.

The ban, which went into effect last Saturday, is a campaign by the government against single-use plastics which contribute to the production of half of the plastic every year.

Customers in New Zealand were already somewhat used to such bans, bringing their own reusable tote bags ever since take-home plastic bags were banned in 2019.

Exceptions are being made for supermarkets, pharmacies, hospitality venues and health and disability centres when using plastic straws for people with disabilities.

According to Associate Environment Minister Rachel Brooking, the 2019 ban had already prevented over 1 billion plastic bags from being used in New Zealand.

The hope is that the new ban on thing bags would reduce it further by 150 million bags per year.

Barbie Director & Netflix To Release Two New Narnia Films

Barbie Director & Netflix To Release Two New Narnia Films
Jul 4 2023 Share

Streaming giant Netflix is reportedly working on rebooting The Chronicles of Narnia, placing Barbie director Greta Gerwig at the helm.

Two films are being reportedly planned by the streaming network ahead of Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie flick’s release later this month.

The Chronicles of Narnia saw three film adaptations in 2005, 2008 and 2010 respectively, and are based on the books by C.S Lewis.

It is unknown which of the seven books by Lewis that Gerwig wants to reimagine and whether or not we’ll see the familiar faces of the Pevensie children in the new franchise.

39-year-old Gerwig’s track record as director is pretty impressive, having been nominated for five Oscars after her break-out success of Lady Bird.

It’ll be interesting to see how she transitions from the pink and lavish world of the Barbies and Kens to the fantastical woodlands of Narnia.

Did you watch the original Narnia films? And would you watch two new films developed by Netflix?
