Motorcyclist Grievously Injured After Reported Hit & Run

Yesterday, at around 2115hrs, police were informed of a traffic accident which took place on Kennedy Drive, St Paul’s Bay.

Police convened immediately on site and preliminary investigations showed that a 21 year old man of Nepalese nationality and resident of St Paul’s Bay suffered some injuries after he was allegedly hit by a vehicle while he was driving his Peugeot Tweet motorcycle.

The vehicle that reportedly hit the motorcyclist kept driving.

A medical team was called on site and he was taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where he was certified as having suffered grievous injuries.

Investigations by police are still ongoing.

Robert Abela & Bernard Grech Meet GSSE Team Malta

Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition Leader Bernard Grech both met with the Maltese athletes who recently achieved record-breaking success at the Games of the Small States of Europe, held last week in Andorra.

Dr Abela welcomed the contingent at the Auberge de Castille, accompanied by Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima.

He praised the athletes, coaches, technical staff, and the Maltese Olympic Committee for securing Malta’s best-ever performance in the Games when competing abroad.

The team earned an impressive 56 medals, including 13 golds. The Prime Minister described the results as a testament to the commitment of athletes and administrators, noting that recent years have seen significant investment in sport, particularly through the National Development and Social Fund.

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech also met with the athletes, commending their achievements and pledged that a Nationalist Government would appoint a Minister solely dedicated to the sector.

Over 7,800 Maltese Driving Licenses Issued In 2024

Responding to a parliamentary question, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett revealed that, in 2024, the total number of driving licenses for Maltese drivers were 7,824.

The Minister revealed, as he had done in a previous response, that 19,488 took a driving test in 2024 and that out of these, 8,890 passed.

This would mean that 1,066 would have been issued to foreign citizens. This follows a separate parliamentary question which revealed that 10,000 failed their test in 2024.

The previous response revealed that 54.81% succeeded on their first attempt; 25.79% passed on the second; 12.13% on the third; 7.27% on the fourth attempt.

Environmental Regeneration Project Making A Difference In Santa Luċija

A major regeneration initiative currently underway in the social housing areas of Santa Luċija is delivering a tangible environmental and aesthetic transformation. The project, being carried out by the Housing Authority in collaboration with Housing Projects Solution Ltd, aims to improve the physical environment and undertake essential maintenance across the area.

During a recent visit to the site, Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation, Roderick Galdes, highlighted the significance of the project, stating: “With an investment of approximately €520,000, this project is having a direct impact on 56 families living in these housing blocks, as well as on the wider Santa Luċija community. Everyone benefits when a cleaner and more attractive environment is created.”

The regeneration work spans a total of seven social housing blocks and includes façade enhancements, upgrades to communal areas, and roof refurbishments.

Minister Galdes emphasised the government’s broader strategy, saying: “These regeneration projects in the social housing sector, which we are implementing in various localities across the country, reflect our government’s holistic approach to quality of life. This encompasses not only an individual’s home but also the community environment in which they live. Projects such as these help to uplift families, support mental well-being, and safeguard human dignity by enhancing the spaces we call home.”
