According to official data shared with MaltaDaily, there were 3,002,823 total inbound visitors in 2023, including cruise passengers overnighting in the island.

Excluding cruise passengers, the total number of inbound tourists was 2,975,670, with first time tourists seeing an increase of 34% over 2022 at 2,305,255. 

20,241,803 was the total number of nights spent by inbound tourists – an increase of 21.9% over the previous year. 

Meanwhile, 1,238,827 inbound tourists stayed for 7 nights or more in the Maltese islands. The total expenditure in Euro by inbound tourists was €2,671,431,000.

This is an increase of over 32.7% over the previous year. The per capita expenditure in Euro of inbound tourists in 2023 was €898. 

Meanwhile, 547,991 Italian tourists came to Malta, making it the largest market in 2023. Australia registered the largest growth of all markets over 2022 with 53,216 tourists making their way to the island.

Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed Parliament during a debate on the Climate Action Bill, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enacting changes in the fairest manner to foster progress and enhance quality of life for all citizens. He highlighted the proposed establishment of a Climate Change Authority as a significant step towards cohesive and decisive action on climate change, emphasizing its role in fostering holistic perspectives and engaging all stakeholders in meaningful dialogue.

Abela stressed the urgency of embracing change to avoid widespread suffering and underscored the importance of proactive environmental policies rooted in prevention. He cited various ongoing initiatives such as the promotion of cleaner energy, sustainable tourism practices, recycling efforts, and investment in green projects as part of Malta’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

While advocating for a green transition as an economic opportunity, Abela reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritize the welfare of families and ensure that the burden of change does not fall solely on citizens. He warned against populism and emphasized the need for collective efforts and a shift in mindset to address climate challenges while promoting economic growth and social support.

Abela highlighted the crucial role of children and young people in shaping decisions related to climate action, emphasizing the government’s engagement with youth through forums such as the Youth Advisory Forum. He concluded by expressing Malta’s readiness to embrace change as an opportunity for prosperity and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to implementing sustainable social and economic reforms outlined in the Climate Action Bill.

Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, honored the 14 victims of the tragic shooting at Charles University in Prague during her visit to the Czech capital. 

As part of her pre-election visits to EU Member States ahead of the 8th June elections, Metsola laid a wreath of flowers and lit a candle at the Philosophical Faculty alongside University Rector Milena Kraličkova. 

Reflecting on December’s appalling attack that also left 25 injured, Metsola expressed sorrow, stating, “it pains me to think about the many families mourning their loved ones during a time of peace and unity. My thoughts are with them and the victims.”

During her visit, Metsola engaged in discussions with Czech President General Petr Pavel regarding low voter turnout in the Czech Republic during the 2019 MEP elections, aiming to improve participation next June by delivering a clear message across all generations. 

Metsola also met with Prime Minister Petr Fiala, discussing the challenges facing Czech and European citizens, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and encouraging voter engagement.

Acknowledging Czechia’s 20 years of EU membership, Metsola highlighted the upcoming commemoration in May as an opportunity to reflect on the benefits of European integration and advocate for increased voter participation. 

Stressing the significance of European unity, Metsola urged citizens not to take Europe for granted, emphasizing the importance of voicing their opinions through voting. Additionally, she engaged with students at the Prague University of Economics and Business, addressing their inquiries during her visit.
