More than 40 million COVID-19 cases registered worldwide

As COVID-19 cases continue to surge and countries are imposing more and more measures and lockdown situations, the total amount of COVID-19 cases around the world surpasses 40 million. 

From this amount, as collected by Johns Hopkins University, more than 1.1 million virus deaths have been registered, with the highest number of cases emerging from the U.S., India and Brazil at 8.1 million, 7.5 million and 5.2 million respectively.

The World Health Organisation reported that last week, Europe had registered a record-high number of cases with nearly 700,000, with the region accounting for an approximate third of cases worldwide.

More than 300,000 swab tests have been administered

Following this afternoon’s report of 109 COVID-19 cases overnight, a total of 300,326 swab tests have been administered since the beginning of pandemic in Malta. 

The island currently stands at a total of 1,450 active cases following the Government’s recently imposition of new measures.

109 COVID-19 cases registered overnight with 6 recoveries

Malta has registered 109 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 2,561 swab tests, while 6 patients have recovered. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

Today’s cases are still being investigated. From yesterday’s cases; 40 cases were family members of previously known cases, 17 cases were contact of positive work colleagues, 7 cases were direct contacts with other positive cases, 6 cases were from social gatherings with other positive cases and 2 cases were imported.

To date, Malta has registered 4,737 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 3,242 have recovered, 45 died and 1,450 are still active.

BOV Żabbar branch close temporary following COVID-19 case

Bank of Valletta has advised that its Żabbar branch will be closing temporarily as from today, following a reported COVID-19 case from one of its employees. 

The company has reported that it will be following all guidelines and measures issued by Health Authorities and will be re-opening once they deem the establishment clear.

The Gżira, Marsa and Qormi branches are also currently closed due to the same issues with the Ħamrun branch partially open with certain services.
