A bronze monument honouring Professor Oliver Friggieri, the renowned Maltese author, scholar, and educator, was unveiled in Floriana.
The inauguration ceremony, organised by Heritage Malta under the Prime Minister’s Office, marked a significant tribute to Friggieri’s impactful legacy. Initiated less than a month after his passing, the process involved proposing designs and selecting artist John Grima for the monument.
Prime Minister Robert Abela praised Friggieri’s multifaceted contributions, recognizing him not only as a literary figure but as someone deeply committed to the well-being of Malta. Abela acknowledged Friggieri’s constructive critiques and enduring influence on national consciousness.
Minister Owen Bonnici highlighted the government’s commitment to commemorating Friggieri’s authenticity and cultural contributions.
The monument, located near the statue of national poet Dun Karm Psaila, symbolizes Friggieri’s academic stature and includes verses from his celebrated poem ‘Jekk.’
Born in Floriana, Friggieri’s impact on the literary world, national identity, and his unwavering humanity were eloquently expressed during the ceremony by family, friends, distinguished speakers, and artistic performances.
The event underscored the lasting legacy of a prominent figure in Malta’s cultural and literary heritage.
