Momentum Party Seeks Electoral Reforms & Equality In Meeting With President

The Momentum Party executive convened with President Myriam Spiteri Debono at St. Anton’s Palace to engage in discussions on governance, representation and equality in Malta.

Among the main topics addressed was the call for electoral reform to enhance representation for smaller parties, aiming to create a more inclusive democracy.

Earlier this year, President Spiteri Debono emphasised the importance of electoral reform to prevent growing voter disengagement.

Additionally, the party proposed an amendment to the constitution to explicitly protect citizens from age-based discrimination, ensuring age is recognised in anti-discrimination laws.

The conversation also extended to other concerns, such as improving transparency and fairness within public administration.

Stronger Security & Penalties For Sports Events Announced

The Ministries of Sport and Home Affairs announced that starting soon, sporting events will be accompanied by licensed security stewards.

Stewards will manage event access, check for prohibited items, monitor for threats, and assist law enforcement. They must complete a training course approved by the Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport (AIMS) and the police.

In addition, penalties for violence, misconduct, or hate speech at events will increase, with fines now ranging from €500 to €5,000 and bans of up to 5 years.

The changes follow consultations with the Malta Football Association (MFA) and other stakeholders.

Minister Byron Camilleri called the reform a modernisation of event security, while Minister Clifton Grima described it as a key step in improving the fan experience and sports infrastructure.

MFA president Bjorn Vassallo highlighted the association’s role in advocating for these changes whilst Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà supported the reform noting it allows the police to focus on core duties.

Malta’s International Fireworks Festival Returns With Over 85 Teams

The Malta International Fireworks Festival will take place from the 22nd to the 30th of April at the Grand Harbour and in Gozo. It will feature over 85 local and international fireworks teams.

Tourism Minister Ian Borg and MTA CEO Carlo Micallef revealed the details during a press conference.

The festival is organised by the MTA and celebrates Malta’s pyrotechnic heritage, blending tradition with innovation. Local band clubs will also participate for the first time this year.

The festival will kick off on April 22nd and 25th at the Grand Harbour, move to Nadur in Gozo on April 26th, and conclude with a grand finale on April 30th at the Grand Harbour.

The final night will feature 2024 winners Għaqda tan-Nar Kerċem, plus a special show combining pyrotechnics and technology.

Minister Ian Borg emphasised the festival’s role in enhancing Malta’s tourism and national identity, while MTA’s CEO highlighted its growth and contribution to Malta’s tourism.

Malta Experiences 17 Hours Of Rainfall

Malta was hit with nearly 17 hours of continuous rain throughout Thursday and Friday.

The rainfall reached an average of 40mm, equivalent to the total amount the island typically receives over the entire month of March.

As reported by the Facebook page ‘It-Temp Madwarna’, a rise in temperature and warmer weather are expected in the coming days. By next week, daytime highs will likely surpass 20°C.

This weekend is however expected to start with foggy conditions during the early morning hours of today and tomorrow.
