Ongoing Works To Strengthen Electricity Distribution Network

Ongoing Works To Strengthen Electricity Distribution Network

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli and Enemalta Executive Chairperson Ryan Fava visited Swatar to observe progress on a major project aimed at strengthening Malta’s electricity distribution system. The initiative involves laying approximately 10 kilometres of underground medium-voltage cables, linking a newly extended DC substation in Msida to several substations in Birkirkara, Msida, and Santa Venera.

This project is designed to improve network connectivity, resilience, and flexibility. In the event of a fault, Enemalta technicians will be able to restore electricity more quickly, reducing disruptions for customers. Minister Dalli emphasised that this is part of a broader national strategy to modernise Malta and Gozo’s energy infrastructure. She stressed the importance of preparing the energy system for future demands, including challenges posed by climate change and rising consumption. “This is a direct investment in people’s quality of life,” she noted.

The Minister also commended the cooperation between local councils, residents, and workers, which has been key to ensuring minimal disruption during the works. She highlighted the project’s long-term value in supporting the country’s ecological transition and digital transformation of the energy grid.

Chairperson Fava echoed the importance of continued infrastructure development, praising the dedication of workers and community members. He reaffirmed Enemalta’s commitment to delivering high-quality service that meets future demands.

This €2.7 million project is co-funded by the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), underlining its importance within Malta’s national development goals.
