Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, has visited the final stages of preparation for the upcoming Mediterrane Film Festival. Accompanied by Film Commissioner Johann Grech, the Minister expressed his satisfaction at the efforts underway and praised the hard work of all those involved in bringing the festival to life.
Malta, with over 100 years of experience in film production, continues to build on its reputation as a desirable filming location. The Mediterrane Film Festival plays a key role in this strategy by drawing international attention to the island’s capabilities and potential in the global film industry.
The festival opens tomorrow, Saturday 21 June, with a special screening of Gladiator II at Fort Ricasoli. This major production was partly filmed in Malta in 2023 and involved a large number of Maltese and Gozitan crew members.
Running until 29 June, the festival will host 55 screenings across a range of iconic venues, including Fort Ricasoli, Laparelli Gardens, Spazju Kreattiv and the Embassy Cinemas in Valletta. The programme features a diverse mix of films, including blockbusters, local productions and international classics. Highlights include Popeye, Assassin’s Creed, Troy, Wicked, and the Maltese film Ciao Ciao.
In addition to the screenings, the festival will offer masterclasses and panel discussions led by renowned figures from the global film community.
Tickets are available from mediterrane.com, with all proceeds from screenings donated to Puttinu Cares.
