During an event at the Family Park in Ta’ Qali, Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela launched the ‘Move to Improve’ campaign.
This initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity and encourage more people to incorporate it into their daily routines.
Minister Abela highlighted statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), showing that individuals with insufficient physical activity are 20% to 30% more likely to develop life-threatening illnesses at a younger age compared to those who engage in daily exercise.
He emphasised that physical activity plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and serves as a preventive measure against chronic diseases. A significant percentage of adults in Malta are overweight, and the high prevalence of obesity increases the risk of various health conditions, including circulatory diseases, cancers, respiratory diseases, and diabetes. This underscores the need to further promote physical activity.
“The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness and encourage individuals of all ages to incorporate physical activity into their daily routine. Even a short walk or simple exercises that require no equipment can have a positive impact on one’s health,” Minister Abela concluded.
