The Ministry for Health and Active Ageing has launched a consultation document on Non-Communicable Diseases, which includes a policy framework for preventing non-transmissible diseases.
During the launch, Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela explained that Non-Communicable Diseases are long-term illnesses that are not transmitted from person to person.
The consultation document outlines key measures to combat this type of illness, such as reducing tobacco use, reducing alcohol consumption, addressing overweight and obesity issues, promoting healthy eating, increasing physical activity, encouraging earlier diagnosis, and promoting mental health and well-being.
Minister Abela emphasized that addressing this type of illness is a national priority. He added that this strategy aims to foster collaboration and coordination between sectors and stakeholders, leading to improved health and well-being for the population.
Minister Abela stated that these diseases are responsible for the majority of deaths worldwide. “Through this document, we are continuing our efforts to prevent these types of illnesses, such as heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, obesity, and diabetes, among others, thereby leading to a healthier life,” concluded Minister Abela.
