Addressing a press conference, PN MPs Joe Giglio and Alex Borg stated that Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa and Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri are the ones to be held responsible for any accident which occurs due to the state of police working conditions.
PN spokesperson for Home Affairs Joe Giglio said that Malta is facing a reality wherein the police force is lacking new recruits and also losing members due to a lack of motivation.
He blamed officers being overworked, overstretched and underpaid and said that whilst we often hear about someone leaving the force we scarcely hear about someone joining.
This comes after the Malta Police Union highlighted the conditions of some police stations in terms of infrastructure, the latest being the St Julian’s station which was described as a horror house.
On his part, PN spokesperson for Gozo Alex Borg said that the lack of security could be felt in Gozo. He pointed to several incidents which cause tension amongst citizens. A lack of trust is also present, but Borg said that he cannot blame the police for this happening as they are doing their job to the best of their ability.
He said that everyone has a right to feel safe in their home, and that the Nationalist Party is ready to work with the government to ensure that the problem is tackled as soon as possible.
