Public Bus Usage On The Rise, 2025 Survey Finds

Public Bus Usage On The Rise, 2025 Survey Finds
Jun 24 2025 Share

Public bus use in Malta has grown significantly, now accounting for 12.8% of all daily trips in 2025 compared to 10.8% in 2023.

This increase reflects a broader shift in mobility habits, with more people choosing public transport for their everyday journeys.

According to a nationally representative study by 20/20 Strategy, commissioned by Malta Public Transport, 57% of residents aged 16 and over reported using a public bus in the past year.

The study shows a clear move from occasional to more frequent usage, with 24% of residents now taking the bus daily. This suggests that initiatives such as the Free Public Transport for Residents scheme, alongside ongoing investment in services and fleet modernisation, are having a measurable impact.

Residents increasingly cite the bus as their main mode of travel, while private car usage has declined slightly. Factors driving transport choices include punctuality, safety, availability, and ease of use.

There is also strong public support for a faster, more connected transport network. Around 68% of respondents expressed interest in using a rapid transit solution if it could shorten their journey time.

The findings point to growing reliance on public transport and rising demand for improved infrastructure to support Malta’s evolving mobility needs.
