The picturesque village of Mġarr is getting ready for one of its most anticipated events of the year – the Strawberry Festival, known locally as Festa Frawli.

The festival is now in its 14th year and celebrates the strawberry fruit that is grown in the fields of the village and the surrounding areas.

This year’s edition will take place on Sunday, April 16th, from 10 am to 5 pm, and is expected to attract both residents and tourists to the locality.

The event is organised by the Mġarr Local Council, which has been working tirelessly to ensure that the festival goes ahead as planned.

The festival is an important socio-cultural event that brings together the community and celebrates the rich agricultural heritage of the area.

The festival was started in 2007 as an experiment by the local council, who were keen to promote the Maltese agriculture industry and the strawberry fruit in particular.

During the festival, visitors can enjoy a variety of food stalls that sell different products made from strawberries, including jams, cakes, and drinks.

Professional chefs will also be on hand to cook up a storm using strawberries as the main ingredient. The event will also feature local artists, who will provide entertainment throughout the day.

Agreement to strengthen the work in favour of equality in Gozo signed today

Agreement signed between Government of Malta and LGBTI+ Gozo union

The Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms and Equality Rebecca Buttigieg announced that €30,000 have been allocated so that the LGBTI+ Gozo union hires a community worker with the aim of the LGBTIQ community in Gozo having a point of reference. She also stressed that strengthening equality in Gozo is a principle that the Government strongly believes in, and they are aware that there are still challenges that must be addressed.

The Government of Malta has signed a new social agreement with LGBTI+ Gozo union, aimed at strengthening the work in favour of equality in Gozo. The agreement was signed by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Reforms and Equality and the LGBTI+ Gozo union, which is the only non-governmental LGBTIQ+ organisation in Gozo.

Since its establishment eight years ago, the association has done valuable work to increase awareness and knowledge about the LGBTIQ community, and this investment from the Government will help ensure that the LGBTIQ community in Gozo receives the necessary services.

The agreement was signed in the presence of the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri and the Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms and Equality Rebecca Buttigieg.

Catherine Camilleri, the coordinator of LGBTI+ Gozo, expressed gratitude for the Government’s continued support, which allows them to make a difference in the lives of LGBTI+ people in Gozo. With this agreement, they will be able to invest more in their community and continue their efforts to further promote equality and inclusion.

The agreement is part of a chain of initiatives that will culminate next September as Malta hosts Europride.

Eurostat shows 6.7% of under 16’s in Malta are deprived of basic necessities

The Nationalist Party issued a press release highlighting the concerning issue of material and social deprivation faced by Maltese children.

According to Eurostat, 6.7% of children under the age of 16 in Malta are deprived of basic materials and certain social services, while two out of ten are at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

The Eurostat definition of material and social deprivation includes a scale of 13 goods or services, and if a person cannot afford at least seven of them, they are considered to be materially or socially deprived. These goods and services include the ability to pay unexpected expenses, pay for a week’s holiday, pay back debts, electricity bills or rent, access to a vehicle for personal use, and access to the internet, among others.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) also released a report last December, which indicated that the rate of risk of poverty or social exclusion in Malta reached 20.3% of the population living in residences. This means that over 100,000 people in Malta are currently living in poverty.

The press release also highlights the stark contrast between the plight of Maltese children and the privileges enjoyed by the country’s elites.
