European Parliament President Roberta Metsola is visiting Israel and the Palestinian territories today and tomorrow to support diplomatic efforts for peace.
Her visit aims to reinforce Europe’s commitment to maintaining the ceasefire and securing a hostage deal, while advocating for security for Israel and a viable future for Palestinians.
She will also highlight the EU’s continued humanitarian aid to Gaza and urge the international community to increase support.
Metsola has been actively involved in diplomatic discussions, recently meeting leaders from Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, the US, and Arab nations to push for stability in the Middle East.
The European Parliament’s resolution on 18 January 2024 was the first by a European institution to call for the release of hostages, dismantling of Hamas, revival of the two-state solution, and renewed peace talks.
During her visit, she will meet with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Knesset Speaker Amir Ohan, visit humanitarian operations at Kerem Shalom Border Crossing and EUBAM Rafah, and meet Palestinian leaders in Ramallah.
She will also speak with released hostages and victims of the conflict. Metsola’s visit reaffirms the EU’s role in facilitating peace efforts in the region.
