Metsola Hints She’ll Stay In Brussels, Politico Reports

In comments to Politico, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said that she has ‘a responsibility here’, referring to Brussels.

This hints at her not following through with the calls for her to become the new leader of the Nationalist Party following the resignation of Bernard Grech yesterday, Tuesday 10th June 2025.

Politico previously released a news article shining light on Metsola as a possible successor to Grech. Meanwhile, PN MP Ryan Callus revealed that he is ready to give up his parliamentary seat for the next PN Leader, hinting that the candidate might not currently be a member of parliament.

Even Franco Debono took to social media to report that before any names are put forth, the question of whether Metsola will be among the candidates has to be addressed.

This after he shared various messages urging him on for the leadership.

Mater Dei Embraces Digital Shift In Patient Care

Mater Dei Hospital has taken a major step in its digital transformation with Ward S4 now fully operating with electronic patient records.

The initiative was confirmed by Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela, who described the move as a government priority in enhancing patient care.

The pilot project saw doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in the ward adopt the ‘Patient Dashboard’ system to digitally record notes.

Originally developed during the COVID-19 pandemic by the Health Informatics team, the system was already being used in the Surgery Department and Outpatients section.

“This is a significant step in our digital transition,” said Minister Abela. “Ward S4 is now entirely paper-free, and we intend to extend this to more areas across our healthcare system.”

The shift aims to improve both clinical outcomes and daily operations by eliminating risks associated with paper notes, such as damage or illegibility. It also boosts data security and efficiency.

The system is accessible across other facilities, including Gozo General Hospital and St Vincent de Paul Residence.

Dr Clifford Caruana, Chair of General and Vascular Surgery, highlighted the environmental benefits and noted that digital records better safeguard patient privacy, complying with GDPR regulations.

Over 6,900 First Time Buyer Payments To Be Issued By June

By the end of June, the Housing Authority will issue 6,970 payments to first-time buyers as part of a government scheme aimed at helping people take their first step onto the property ladder.

Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation Roderick Galdes confirmed the news during a press conference, stating that over €6.5 million has been allocated to support this initiative.

The scheme offers €1,000 annually for ten years, providing a total of €10,000 in financial assistance to eligible buyers.

Minister Galdes noted that those who purchased their first property in 2024 and applied on time will receive their first payment this month. Those who applied later will still be paid, once their application is processed.

To ensure fairness, the Minister also announced a final deadline: individuals who bought their first property in 2024 but have not yet applied now have until the end of July 2025 to benefit from the scheme.

“This investment supports people, especially young first-time buyers, and ensures everyone has the same opportunity to own a home,” said Galdes.

Housing Authority CEO Matthew Zerafa highlighted the broader support being offered, including the firsthome.mt portal, which helps guide buyers throughout the entire process.

Malta With 5th Highest Amount Of Female Pre-Primary Teachers

In 2023, Malta had the fifth highest percentage, along with Cyprus, of female teachers in pre-primary education.

99.1% of pre-primary educators in Malta that year were female. The list was topped by Romania at 99.7%, followed by Slovakia, Hungary and Bulgaria at 99.6%, 99.5% and 99.2% respectively.

Across the EU, the total was a whopping 95.3%, and the countries with the lowest levels still registered quite a high share of female pre-primary educators.

The Netherlands registered the lowest at 87.9%, followed by France at 91.5%.
