Jun 14 2025 Share

@robertaMetsola said in a statement that although many encouraged her to put her name forward, her responsibilities in the EU are too great to leave behind. She said, “Ten months ago I was re-elected as President of the European Parliament, a role that carries global responsibility not just for the EU, but especially for Malta. I cannot walk away from that.”

Metsola has confirmed she will not be running for the leadership of the Nationalist Party following Bernard Grech’s unexpected resignation earlier this week.

She added that every political decision she makes is thoughtful and determined, always driven by what is best for the country. Metsola explained that the timing and seriousness of the challenges facing Europe right now require her full focus. “My commitment cannot be divided,” she said.

Metsola promised to fully support the next PN leader in any way she can. “We can win the election and save our country if we work together,” she added.

Malta has signed a major agreement to open a United Nations office in Valletta. It will form part of the new Global Centre for Maritime Sanctions Monitoring, which aims to catch ships breaking international rules and stop crimes at sea. The project is launching soon in partnership with Antigua and Barbuda.

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg signed the deal in Vienna with UN drugs and crime chief Ghada Waly. The new UN office will train countries to track suspicious vessels, share information, and tackle issues like sanctions evasion and flag-hopping.

In his message, Delia emphasised the need for a new kind of politics one based on unity, mutual respect, and collaboration rather than personal attacks. He stressed that the party must focus on working together for one goal: one country, one people, one nation.

He also addressed the matter of selecting a new leader for the opposition party, saying such a decision is significant and requires time, reflection, and careful consideration. He underlined that leadership choices must be driven by the party’s members—the Tesserati.

Delia concluded, “They are our strength – present in every town, every street, and close to everyday citizens. Their voice is the only voice that matters. It is the Tesserati and only the Tesserati who decide and their choice respected. That is what our party deserves. That is what our country deserves.”
