Lionel Messi’s plea to FIFA has seemingly been heard after controversial Spanish referee Mateu Lahoz has been sent home from Qatar following a polarising quarter-final match between Argentina and Netherlands.

Lahoz got received a fair amount of flak from players and supporters worldwide after dishing out a whopping 15 yellow cards during Argentina’s clash with the Oranje.

The Spaniard’s officiating was ill-received by both teams, with a vocal majority of Argentina’s squad led by Messi himself criticising the official. “‘I think FIFA must take care of this, it cannot put a referee like that for a match of such magnitude, of such importance. The referee cannot fail to be up to the task,” Messi stated.

Lahoz has reportedly not been called to officiate in the semi-finals or final and will return home from Qatar following the mass backlash.

Argentina are set to face Croatia this evening in what is expected to be a heated semi-final match as all four remaining teams look to make World Cup history.
