Maltese MEP Peter Agius has announced a European Parliament grant given to aid the Maltese language, specifically in official matters such as parliament meetings.
The Nationalist MEP stated that “Maltese is the mother tongue of our nation and a vital part of our identity as Maltese people; therefore, it is our duty to defend it within Europe,”
Agius remarked that he is fully committed to the cause and even started working on it once he got elected, meeting Director-General for Interpretation at the European Parliament, Agnieskia Walter-Drop.
In these meetings, Peter Agius made it absolutely clear that the European Parliament must also speak Maltese, allowing Maltese MEPs to speak in their native language.
This includes a recently approved €40,000 special grant from the European Parliament to the University of Malta, aimed at supporting the training of new Maltese interpreters.
In addition, specialized training programs have been set up in Brussels to equip Maltese individuals for careers in interpretation.
Peter Agius concluded that “on this European Day of Languages, we must recognize that if Europe does not speak the language of its peoples, it will have no voice”.
