Three individuals believed to have been part of an international organized crime ring have been arrested by Malta’s police force in St Julian’s. The police issued a statement this morning revealing that three Romanian men, aged 54, 40 and 39 respectively, had been arrested during the sting operation as they formed part of an international ring specializing in pickpocketing. The men would take to heavily crowded places to rob unsuspecting citizens. The police revealed that the men committed a number of thefts before moving to another country. With police underwent ‘intelligence-led policing’ to apprehend the trio, involving a number of specialized branches and district police.
With foreign police forces collaborating with the local force, including Europol and Interpol, the men were found to have been committing similar crimes at tourist hotspots around Europe since 2010. Intelligence gathered alerted the police that the men were to return to the island from Budapest. With ongoing monitoring, the men left the airport for St Julian’s by bus and were promptly arrested as they arrived in their hotel. Their charges are expected to be heard in court today.
