Mellieħa’s Kingmaker Had Wedding Blessed By Pope In 2022

Mellieħa's Kingmaker Had Wedding Blessed By Pope In 2022

Matthew Borg Cuschieri, the independent candidate elected for Mellieħa’s Local council – placing him in the position of kingmaker – was the same person whose marriage was blessed by Pope Francis back in 2022.

Pope Francis was passing by in his motorcade in Mellieħa on his way back from Gozo as Matthew and his now wife Danielle tied the knot.

The Pope asked the car-cade to stop after spotting the newly weds, taking Matthew’s hand to share a quick word before driving off as the crowd cheered on.

Wedding videographers Ernest Vella and Zepp Gauci had captured the moment.

The Mellieħa local council elected 4 PL candidates – John Buttigieg, Rebecca Bartolo Cutajar, Kurt Buttigieg and Jude Cauchi – and 4 PN candidates – Gabriel Micallef (with most votes), Corinne Castillo, Emvin Bartolo and Loridana Darmanin.

The ninth place was given to Matthew, who will now decide who gets elected mayor in the first local council meeting.

Loridana Darmanin was elected in the Mellieħa local council, and this prompted a wholesome reaction by her daughter Rebecca who embraced her mum and cried in joy with her.

Her daughter Rebecca took to social media to share the news and the moment she hugged her mum for her achievement, being moved to tears.

‘Mument ta’ bint kburija! Il-kunsilliera l-ġdida fil-Mellieħa’, wrote Rebecca.

The result in Mellieħa still awaits the election of a mayor as the locality elected 4 PL candidates, 4 PN candidates and an independent candidate.

The mayor will be decided in the first meeting of the local council and thus there are no indications of who the mayor will be. The vote may depend on the independent candidate, who will vote for a candidate of either party.

Love Island Malta producer Ben Camille took to Instagram stories to share the flood of requests for the programme to start airing earlier.

Meanwhile, in an inStagram poll he held, over 96% of followers were in favour of the programme being aired an hour earlier at 9pm, given that the locally beloved show starts at 10pm on regular weekdays.

However, the air time was pushed even further back this week due to the MEP and Local Council elections, keeping viewers up until midnight in some cases.

Some followers even personally DM-ed him, saying things like:
