While Gibson was initially believed to be location-scouting for a sequel to The Passion of the Christ during his recent visit to Malta, the actor-director revealed in a MovieWeb interview that the trip was also tied to this new project.

The Siege of Malta, a pivotal 1565 battle, saw the outnumbered Maltese forces hold off 40,000 Ottoman troops under the command of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
