Mel Gibson is reportedly working on an exciting new limited TV series about the Great Siege of Malta, a historical event that saw 700 knights heroically defend the island against a massive Ottoman invasion.
While Gibson was initially believed to be location-scouting for a sequel to The Passion of the Christ during his recent visit to Malta, the actor-director revealed in a MovieWeb interview that the trip was also tied to this new project.
The Siege of Malta, a pivotal 1565 battle, saw the outnumbered Maltese forces hold off 40,000 Ottoman troops under the command of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Gibson expressed his fascination with the story, calling it “pretty crazy” and highlighting the fortresses in Malta as the only suitable filming location.
While Gibson is deeply involved as a producer and has collaborated with a talented writer on the script, he remains unsure whether he’ll act in the series, given his busy schedule. Regardless, he is confident in the project’s potential, stating that it’s “going to be good for somebody.” Fans of historical epics can expect an engaging and visually stunning retelling of one of history’s greatest underdog victories.
