Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti has announced the recipients of the MCAST Research Fellowship Scheme 2024, an initiative that seeks to strengthen research and innovation in Malta. Run in partnership with MCAST, the scheme opens doors for academics and young people to participate in projects that tackle pressing national challenges.
The scheme will fund four projects in critical areas, including Intelligent Manufacturing, Future Digital Technologies, and Environmental Sustainability. Highlighting the importance of such initiatives, Azzopardi Tanti stated, “This government is investing in projects that improve the quality of life for Maltese citizens, and research and innovation are key to our country’s future.”
Among the awarded projects is Sea2Tech, a venture exploring seaweed recycling for industrial use. Researcher Alexia Massa Gallucci emphasized its ecological benefits, calling it a model for sustainable resource use. Industry partner Ing. David Sciberras from Invent 3D highlighted the importance of academic-industry partnerships, which he believes are essential to maintaining competitiveness and tackling technological challenges through innovative solutions.
