Mater Dei Suffered 40 Minute Power Cuts Last Night

According to various sources, Mater Dei lost power on Monday night as generators failed to start supplying power for around 40 minutes in specific parts of the building.

The power went out at around 0100hrs, with Times of Malta reporting that power went out again before 0700hrs.

The news lead to Nationalist MPs calling out the power crisis, with Opposition Leader Bernard Grech writing:

‘He told us it’s not a national crisis’, referring to Prime Minister Robert Abela, ‘€400 million were given to Vitals and Steward and tranquility of mind cannot be ensured in the health sector.’

PN MEP David Casa also reported the news, saying that the patients at the hospital are suffering the mistakes of Robert Abela. PN MP Ian Vassallo Hagi also posted, thanking the Mater Dei staff for doing their best to mitigating the inconvenience caused.

Malta Rangers Urge Public To Avoid Making Fires

The Malta Ranger Unit have issued a public statement urging the public to avoid making any fires as the combination of increased winds and a heat wave could lead to disastrous results.

‘Our Rangers will up the game by increased patrolling of the areas where fires are illegal and make sure that such are discontinued’, wrote the Malta Ranger Unit.

‘We suggest that you don’t do any charcoal BBQs or open fires during this heatwave, but if you still proceed doing so, we summarised some do’s and don’ts.’

ONLY make fires where it’s legal, check with the Local Council if unsure.
Do NOT make a fire closer than 10-15m to vegetation!
ONLY put the charcoal/wood that you need to cook the food.
ALWAYS have plenty of water next to the fire pit/BBQ. A fire blanket is a good investment!
Do NOT leave any fire or BBQ unattended, not even for a minute.
If you use a single use BBQ, remove the paper tray and make use of the metal stand. The paper catches fire if the aluminium tray is kept in it.
ELEVATE all fires and BBQs. Never do a ground fire/BBQ!
Do NOT dispose of leftover charcoal or wood in nature. Bring it with you home! It might self ignite later on if left on site.

‘Let’s not drain the resources of Civil Protection Malta’, the unit urged, asking the public to avoid the fires that could easily be avoided and safeguard the few green areas we have left.

Strong Winds To Hit Malta As Heat Wave Persists

As Malta suffers intense temperatures and power cuts, local meteorological reports have forecasted strong winds set to hit the islands starting today and possibly into tomorrow.

A record 42.7°C was registered on Monday 24th July 2023, a record heat set back in 1988 and just one degree under August 1999’s scorching 43.8°C.

According to It-Temp Madwarna, the minimum temperature did not drop below 30°C last night, with the temperature expected to reach 43°C on Tuesday, 25th.

However, some respite might be given to the people on the islands as strong winds are being forecasted to hit starting today and well into Wednesday.

The wind is also set to be of a strong Force 6 to 7, and could bring the temperatures down ever so slightly. The Health Authorities still have their health warning issued, calling on people to look out for signs of heat stroke and how to deal with such situations.
