After weeks of being closed, a COVID-19 intensive treatment unit has been reopened due to a slight increase in COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care.
The special units had been closed in the past weeks due to the diminishing number of patients requiring intensive treatment but sources have revealed that it was becoming increasingly difficult to treat such individuals alongside other critical patients within the hospital’s main ITU.
Sources told Times of Malta that, at the moment, only one of the special ITUs is required to keep up with the COVID-19 cases as their are sufficient beds. This has led to an increased strain on healthcare workers’ workload as they are having to deal with the same number of people but must cover more area. Mater Dei ITU medics have since posted an inspiring photo of themselves at the hospital, calling upon the public to get vaccinated.
