A traffic accident on Selmun Hill has caused significant congestion to and from Mellieħa, leading authorities to close the key route connecting Mellieħa to Xemxija. This has resulted in major traffic jams across northern towns and areas, including Mellieħa, Manikata, Xemxija, and Mġarr.
The accident, which was also reported by the popular Facebook page Maltese Roads Traffic Updates, involved a Kia Picanto and a Toyota Vitz. The Kia was driven by a 39-year-old Mellieħa resident, who sustained minor injuries, while a three-year-old girl in the car also suffered slight injuries. The Toyota was being driven by a 26-year-old woman from Xewkija.
Speaking exclusively to Malta Daily, Mellieħa Mayor Gabriel Micallef stated that the council will not overlook these traffic issues. He also disclosed that the council intends to file a complaint and submit proposals to Transport Minister Chris Bonett.
In a Facebook post, Micallef confirmed that the council promptly alerted officials and police about the incident to help manage traffic.
The Malta Police Force has also advised motorists to avoid the Selmun hill road due to it’s closure and to find alternative routes.
Several people who contacted Malta Daily, have reported that they have been stuck in traffic for over an hour.
