Massive firework ‘Ballun tal-Blalen’ shines over Gozo for Santa Marija closing

As Santa Marija celebrations came to a close, Jason Folfol’s firework spectacular called ‘il-Ballun tal-Blalen’ lit up the night sky with colour. Folfol works with the Saint Joseph Fireworks in Hal Ghaxaq, with a beautiful snapshot captured by local photographer Daniel Cilia.

The photograph captures the moment the colourful explosion made the dark sky over Ta’ Cenc’s cliffs a canvas of fireworks. The Maltese are known for their innovation with fireworks, being a crucial and cultural aspect of local feasts. This one is a prime example of how much passion and work goes into such artistry.

Australian-born athlete aiming to become first Maltese Olympic medallist

Australian-Maltese runner Jared Micallef rejected the chance to represent Australia at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in order to gain Maltese citizenship and represent Malta at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He recently spoke to the Times of Malta newsroom where he revealed why he chose Malta and told them about his past and future aspirations.

Jared told Times of Malta that he chose Malta because “it’s where my roots are from. My grandma and grandpa moved to Australia with my dad and I know how hard they worked to live and raise a family,” he also stated “I’m just really honoured to be part of their legacy and show them how great it could be to represent Malta at the next Olympics in France. If I could make a small island nation more known to the world, it would be amazing.” Jared also recently became an official Maltese citizen and posted on his Instagram his family and his joy of becoming Maltese.

Jared will be hoping that this change will leave his past behind him. Micallef suffered many injuries in his past so much so that he admitted that “For a whole year, I did not run at all,”. Jared recently came 2nd in Australia’s Olympic qualifiers, a result that he can be very proud of. The runner also said that he’s thinking of moving to Malta after the pandemic.

Early August COVID-19 hospitalisations highest since mid-April

According to fresh data by the EU’s disease prevention agency, the number of COVID-19 patients needing hospitalisations was the highest at the start of August since mid-April. According to the ECDC, Malta’s hospital admissions per 100,000 people rate stood at 5.05 for the period up to August 8th. April 18th saw a similar figure reported at 5.83, which was when Malta was still under quasi-lockdown in order to mitigate spread.

Despite hospitalisation rate seems to be climbing, intensive care admissions rate has remained constant as five patients are currently in the ITU. Health authorities attribute this to the COVID-19 vaccine’s efficacy, with global authorities stating that the focus should shift onto hospitals when looking at measures and easing.

Pastizzi make international headlines as the snack holidays are planned around

The Maltese ‘pastizz’, a snack popular amongst the island’s inhabitants, has made International headlines as global newsroom Euronews stated that it deserves a holiday planned around it. The newsroom alleged how once someone gets a taste of the iconic Maltese snack, they will be planning an entire getaway to the island just to get another bite. Pointing out how the island has a pastizzi shop in every village, making it extremely easy to get a bite, the article praises the pastry’s delicious taste to the entire world.

The article also details to its readers the various fillings ‘pastizzi’ come packing – from ricotta to peas and even anchovy. Euronews also highlighted how when famous pastizzeria ‘is-Serkin (Crystal Palace)’ was about to close down, a national outcry was initiated.
