Following a number of questions from journalists during today’s public health conference, Prime Minister Robert Abela and Superintendent for Public Health Prof. Charmaine Gauci explained the efficacy of bar closures and use of face masks in the face of the pandemic, highlighting that the measures showed great results in curbing the spread of COVID-19.

Both went on to state that the authorities will continue to monitor the situation and responsible, science-based decision will be taken in due course.

As it stands, only restaurants and snack bars can reopen starting 10 May and will be allowed to serve tables until 5pm, going on to operate solely on a take-away and delivery basis.

Along with a number of other important COVID-19 measures announced during today’s public health conference, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that €45 million in government vouchers will be distributed to the public within a number of weeks.

These vouchers are aimed at stimulating consumption from businesses as part of the country’s aid towards local establishments, in addition to the wage supplement which had already been in place.

Abela also highlighted the 1st June target for the restart of a proactive touristic season to make way for a busy summer of work for residents of Malta and Gozo.

The future of sports activities in the midst of the pandemic was announced during today’s public health conference addressed by Prime Minister Robert Abela, Health Minister Chris Fearne and Superintendent for Public Health Prof. Charmaine Gauci.

Prime Minister Abela announced that as from 10 May, training sessions for professional contact sports will commence once again while non-contact sports are set to completely resume without spectators.

Along with the aforementioned ease of restrictions, it was also announced that arts education and extra-curricular activities will be announced to start once again.

Restaurants and snack bars to reopen until 5pm as from 10 May

During today’s public health conference, Prime Minister Robert Abela confirmed that as from 10 May,  restaurants and snack bars will be able to re-open to serve tables with a maximum of 4 people until 5PM.

The Prime Minister went on to state that after 5PM, these establishments will continue to operate on a delivery and take-away basis, along with a number of other COVID-19 measure updates.

Abela also confirmed that non-essential shops and services, along with museums are also set to reopen as from tomorrow.
