Independent MP Marlene Farrugia’s abortion decriminalisation bill was a historic first for Malta and, as expected, was followed by many stances, support and criticism from many. Farrugia took to Facebook to explain why she proposed the bill, opening her statement with ‘I value the life of a living woman over that of an unborn foetus.’
She stated that despite wanting to save every unborn foetus, the necessity for women to have control over their bodies, lives and environment takes precedence. ‘I know in my heart that putting the care and empowerment of women on the pedestal they deserve will be very beneficial for the human race’ she said. She concluded that ‘many more lives of the born and unborn will be saved’, and this is the motivation behind the amendment.
