Today Is World Teacher’s Day

Today is World Teacher’s Day, with this year’s day of awareness mainly concerning the increased global concern about the scale and impact of teacher shortages around the world.

According to UNESCO, the world needs around 69 million teachers by the year 2030 to reach universal basic education.

Despite this, many countries around the world are noticing a declining trend in teachers working or entering the profession. The main reasons for this exodus of educators are overworking, undervalued and underpaid labour.

A recent video uploaded to social media by a Maltese teacher reignited the conversation around the issue, with social media influencer and ex-teacher Shanice revealing how she had to leave her job due to many similar reasons.

MEP Alex Agius Saliba Decries Lack Of Action On Migration

MEP Alex Agius Saliba Decries Lack Of Action On Migration

Speaking in the European Parliament, MEP Alex Agius Saliba commemorated the 10 year anniversary since the 2013 Lampedusa tragedy by decrying the lack of action when it comes to the issue of migration.

Tragedies continued to take place in the Mediterranean, Agius Saliba said, and yet nothing has happened. Despite the many declarations and promises, people continued to drown and die in the Mediterranean.

‘We’ve spent years pleading for a mechanism of solidarity between the member states, especially those at the frontiers. Solidarity which was supposedly signed for by every member state when they joined. A solidarity we only use and abuse when we profit from it’.

‘We need to move from words to action. The European pact in regards to migration and asylum needs to be adopted in this legislation.’

Agius Saliba said we need to do this not only to save human lives, but to also send a message to Europe’s citizens that Europe is not just a talking shop but an institution which works.
