President Myriam Spiteri Debono Returns from London Visit

President Myriam Spiteri Debono has returned to Malta after a visit to London, where she observed the work of the Malta Community Chest Fund and other organizations that assist Maltese citizens requiring treatment in the UK. During the trip, the President was accompanied by officers from the Fund, who support patients from diagnosis through their treatment and return to Malta.

Maltese patients and their families met at Sutton to start the tour. President Spiteri Debono also visited the hospitals at Great Ormond Street and St. Bartholomew’s, where she spoke with staff members and hospital administration, including Mr. Kristian Aquilina, a specialist in neuro-oncology. New residences for Maltese patients are being built next to treatment facilities at the Puttinu Cares site, which the President also visited.

President Spiteri Debono also paid a visit to the Malta High Commission, where he met with High Commissioner Emanuel Mallia and personnel to talk about enhancing Malta-UK cultural and business links. The Malta Tourism Authority hosted a networking event to promote Malta’s history and culinary traditions as the journey came to an end.

1st Effort To Restore Seagrass Meadows In Maltese Waters

Taking to social media, marine biologist Alan Deidun shared underwater footage of the first time seagrass meadows in local waters are being attempted at restoration.

‘This is the result of a fruitful collaboration between the MEDSEA Foundation, the Oceanography Malta Research Group (OMRG) of the Department of the Geosciences of the University of Malta and the Environmental Resources Authority (ERA).’

‘Around 1500 Posidonia oceanica shoots sourced from local waters were used to replant a footprint of 100 metres squared of seabed.’

The site is being regularly monitored to assess the success of such a pilot study, Deidun explained.
