Maltese law making waste separation mandatory has officially come into effect, which means that if you hadn’t already, now is the time to start disposing your organic and recyclable material into their appropriate bags.
Published via legal notice on February 14, the mandatory waste separation starts from today, February 14th, but fines for not following the programme will not be handed out until October, as part of a 6-month grace period to educate the public.
A statement from the Environmental Resource Authority (ERA) revealed that persons not disposing of their waste properly until October will receive a warning. In 6 months, persons caught inappropriately disposing of their waste will face €25 fines whilst businesses will be dealt a €75 penalty.
If you didn’t know already, Black Bags should contain Mixed Waste such as dirty take-away containers, packets, nappies, ceramics and other waste of the sort, White Bags should have Organic Waste like food, bones, bread, tea bags and ground coffee, bread and more. Meanwhile, Grey or Green Bags should contain Mixed Recyclables including cardboard, paper, plastic bags, metal cans, soap containers, empty spray cans, foil trays, etc.
