Malta had already signed as the official destination partner for the famous football club in 2019. The agreement was set to run for three years, which therefore includes 2021. The team had already made several appearances in Malta, with their last visit being in 2000 when the team came over for a training camp and played a friendly game against Birkirkara. Games were played in 1967 against Hibernians, 1961 against a Maltese XI selection and 1987 against Naxxar Lions.
