Man who vandalised 13 bus stops gets 32 month jail time

An Eritrean man, 31-years-old who vandalised 13 bus stops in a single night last October has been sentenced to 32 months in jail. Police were informed that a man was actively vandalising bus stops in Birkirkara late at night on 24th October. He was also accused of vandalising bus stops in other locations such as Marsa, Hamrun, San Pawl il-Bahar, Mellieha, Wied il-Ghajn and Hal Luqa.

Initially pleading not guilty for the charges, he admitted to the crimes yesterday in court. The damages amount up to €15,000. Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech also pointed out that the man did not show any signs of remorse for his act before issuing the 32 month jail sentence.

€106,376 worth of school equipment stolen over eight years

Replying to a parliamentary question on behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Minister Byron Camilleri stated that a total of 729 items, amounting up to €106,376, were stolen from educational institutions as of 2013. Computer equipment proved to be the most expensive loss at around €26,848 worth of hardware, with €10,268 stolen in cash form. Other equipment stolen includes a megaphone, kettle and donation envelopes.

The University of Malta filed the most reports, amounting to 144, with an additional 108 items stolen from the library. MCAST comes in second with 87 theft reports. 14 thefts from public schools were reported in 2021 alone. Minister Justyne Caruana also confirmed that two people were charged in court over public school theft.

45 COVID-19 cases registered with 67 recoveries

Malta has registered 45 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 1,512 swab tests, while 67 patients have recovered. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Tuesday 27th April 2021, 318,706 vaccine doses were administered of which 102,535 were 2nd doses.

To date, Malta has registered 30,234 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 29,421 have recovered, 413 died and 400 are still active.

Vouchers to be issued when eligible businesses reopen

Addressing a press conference this morning, Prime Minister Robert Abela stated that the second round of COVID-19 vouchers will only be issued when every business which will benefit from them is permitted to reopen. Bars and nightclubs, which have been closed since October, will thus have to open before the vouchers are officially issued.

€100 will be given to Maltese residents to spend at businesses which were forced to close down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The scheme will inject around €45 million into the economy, but the government is awaiting the ideal moment to distribute the vouchers.
