Man invades World Cup match to stand up for various human right issues

The World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay was briefly stopped after a man holding onto a rainbow flag ran across the pitch in what must be one of the bravest pitch invasions ever considering Qatar’s human rights record.

The brave fan, who was eventually caught by security, also wore a Superman shirt which had the words, ‘Save Ukraine’ on the front and ‘Respect for Iranian women’ on the back, two of the most current pressing human rights issues. The referee was seen picking up and removing the rainbow flag once it fell.

Homosexuality is currently illegal in Qatar whose laws operate under the Islamic State Sharia law. There have been countless reports of bad treatment to fans wearing rainbow colours.

Portugal progress to World Cup knockout stage after narrow win against Uruguay

Portugal have joined fellow favourites France and Brazil in the knockout stages after beating Uruguay, the team that knocked them out in the last World Cup.

The game started with both teams having a cautious mentality and not jeopardize any potential good result. Risks were rarely taken and the defences of both teams shined out more than their attacking players.

Portugal finally broke the deadlock in the 54th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to head in a floating Bruno Fernandes cross. The goal scorer of the goal was questioned as it was not clear enough if the legendary striker had actually touched the ball or not.

It was later confirmed as Fernandes’s goal much to the disappointment of the millions of Ronaldo fans. The attacking midfielder later added another to his tally with a calm and collected penalty in the 92nd minute.

Portugal now have a match against Korea ahead of them whilst Uruguay will have a very heated match against Ghana, a rematch of the intense and dramatic 2010 Word Cup Quarter Final.

Brazil beat Switzerland to qualify for knockout stage

Brazil have beaten Switzerland 1-0 to join France as the second team to qualify for the knockout stages.

The game was very tight with both countries having opportunities to score the opener. Brazil were being there usual entertaining and free flowing selves whilst Switzerland were more structured and relied on catching Brazil out on the counter.

The first goal of the game finally came in the 83rd minute after Manchester United defensive midfielder perfectly placed his shot into the back of the net to delight the vast number of Brazil fans present in the stadium.

Brazil will now face Cameroon whilst Switzerland will be hoping for a good result against Serbia in order to also progress further in this years World Cup

Janet Richard and Jeremy Zammit awarded ‘Athletes of the Year’

Janet Richard and Jeremy Zammit were awarded ‘Athletes of the Year’ by Athletics Malta.

After a series of top level performances during the past months, Richard and Zammit, received the Association’s highest honour during an award ceremony held on Sunday evening.

This year, the long-jumper Jeremy Zammit of Pembroke Athleta broke a national record that stood for 17 years with a jump of 7.73m. He is also the first Maltese athlete in his category to reach the finals of both the World and European Under 20 Championships. Zammit has also obtained a prestigious scholarship at the D1 University of Auburn in the United States, where he will also continue his studies.

Janet Richard, of Pembroke Athleta was awarded this title for the second time after achieving a national record in 400m when competing in the European Championships in Munich, Germany where she achieved a time of 53.49s. Richard also formed part of another national record, in the 4x100m relay, with a time of 45.59s during the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham. She also won two gold medals for Malta in the European Championships of Small Countries.

Athletics Malta also awarded a number of other athletes in the different age categories. The winners include Claire Azzopardi, Beppe Grillo, Dillon Cassar, Bradley Mifsud, Mireya Cassar and Matthew Galea Soler.
